Trips for the 2007-2008 School Year

Grade levels
Our programs are designed for 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

Group Size
Groups are limited to 30 students at Vida Verde because we have a small staff and want to give maximum attention to each student!

Costs
All programs are offered free of charge. Vida Verde requires a $50 deposit due 30 days before your class visit. The deposit will be refunded in full when your class arrives at the site. The only other expected expense should be food and transportation. Donations are always accepted and greatly appreciated.

2-day/1-night Trips
We offer 2-day(overnight) trips for first-time groups. These trips are for teachers or schools who have never visited Vida Verde before.  These trips will include at least two of our formal programs (descriptions found on the "typical student trip" page) and some or most of the following: teambuilding games, group meal preparation, sharing and cleanup, ocean beach visit, chicken feeding and egg collection, campfire/songs/s'mores, night trust hike, camping out in teepees, sports/exercise activity, and a service project. In the case of too much rain some alternative opportunities will be offered, including: papermaking & pottery.

3-day/2-night Trips
We now offer 3-day trips to returning teachers.  We will offer 10 of these trips during the 2008-2009 school year, so sign up early!  The three day experience includes a 4-hour hike in the Butano State Park redwood forest, a 4-hour trip to the coast (Pebble Beach, Tidepools, Pescadero State Beach and Marsh), a tour of a local organic farm with a fun project and harvesting food for dinner, and much more time for team and trust-building as a class.  Please call or email the Vida Verde office for more details.

Split into 2 groups
Please have the students, chaperones and teachers split into two even groups before arriving.  Email us this list of two groups before your trip so that we can make special nametags for the students and chaperones.

Old Clothes, Warm Clothes and Shoes
Students tend to try and dress up for field trips. Please encourage them to dress down, instead. It can get rainy, muddy (fun!)  Please have students wear their worst. It also gets VERY cold at night, so students should bring warm clothes: hats, jackets/sweaters, and gloves. Additionally, close-toed shoes (no sandals) and long pants to keep warm and dry.

Chaperones
We require two adult chaperones per group, one to sleep in the girl's teepee, and one to sleep in the boy's teepee.  Please do not bring more than 4 chaperones.  The Vida Verde instructors will be fully in charge of the activities while you are here. The things that we request chaperones to be in charge of are: Student conduct during the formal programs while V.V. instructors are teaching, taking charge of teeth brushing and bathroom time, taking charge of time inside the teepees, ensuring and quiet and controlled bed time, being available to students during the night for "emergencies" or help to the bathroom, keeping students quiet in the morning until 7 A.M., keeping students together as a group during activities, and participating with the students in the activities.

Instructors
During their trip to Vida Verde, at least 4 qualified instructors will be with the students, including one of the directors of Vida Verde.   All have extensive outdoor teaching experience and ample outdoor skills. All instructors are certified in CPR and First Aid administration by the American Red Cross, and at least one staff member has a Wilderness First Responder Certification.

Food

        2-Day Program

  • There will be four meals: Day 1: lunch & dinner, Day 2: breakfast & lunch
  • Lunch on Day 1 is provided by Vida Verde
  • Students bring one bag lunch from home, and eat that lunch on Day 2 at the beach.
  • This leaves two meals (dinner and breakfast) as the responsibility of the visiting group. Please plan these meals and get the food before you come. We will provide a shopping list/menu.  We have a full kitchen for you to use for meal preparation.
  • Students will take part in preparing the meals. V.V. instructors will help coordinate this.

    3-Day Program
  • There will be 6 meals:  Day 1: lunch & dinner, Day 2: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Day 3: breakfast & lunch
  • Lunch on Day one, Dinner on Day 2, and Lunch on Day 3 are provided by Vida Verde
  • Students bring one bag lunch from home to eat on Day 2
  • This leaves 3 meals (Day 1 dinner, Day 2 breakfast, Day 3 breakfast) as the responsibility of the visiting group.  Please plan these meals and get the food before you come.  We will provide a shopping list/menu.  We have a full kitchen, and the Vida Verde staff (with the help of parent chaperones and students) will prepare all meals.
  • Students will take part in preparing the meals. V.V. instructors will help coordinate this.

Transportation
The least expensive way for students get here is in the vehicles of parent chaperones and teachers. If you have enough vehicles and adult drivers, this is the way to go! The alternatives to this are to charter a bus, or to find 15 passenger vans to use. Please look on the "Transportation" page of this website for further information.
